Access Bank & Fifth Chukker Polo Day 2013

Cambiaso, Dubai Princess Top Fifth Chukker Extravaganza

For the second successive year polo world No. 1 Adolfo Cambiaso and Princess Maitha of Dubai starred for Fifth Chukker in the annual Access Bank Polo Day at Ham Polo Club, London. This year, however, Cambiaso turned up with the rest of his La Dolfina 40-goal team to back up Adamu Atta’s Fifth Chukker and Tajudeen Dantata’s Kangimi Titans in a 24-goal showdown watched with excitement by hundreds of distinguished guests from around the world.

Cambiaso(10) paired with Pablo McDonough (10) to anchor Access Bank Fifth Chukker while Pelon Stirling(10) and Lucas Monteverde (10) teamed up behind Tajudeen (2) and Rashid Albwardy (2) for Titans. As the pros functioned mainly as playmakers it was left to the two Nigerians and two Emiratis in both teams to make a game of it and which they certainly did. Albwardy and Dantata worked up the crowd delightfully with their irrepressible runs and goals that kept the Titans on the verge of taking the match even against some fantastic goals in response from Atta (2) and Princess Maitha (0). Finally, in the all or nothing sixth and final chukka, Fifth Chukker scored the winning goal to take the match 8-7.

In the 12-goal match decided earlier, RTC managed to edge out Shoreline Delaney 6 – 5 1/2 despite Shoreline’s pulsating comeback rally to close a 4-1 deficit before the final chukka. In a repeat of their Access bank cup exploits last month, Diego White(7) again pivoted RTC behind Babangida Hassan(2), Mustapha Sheriff (-2) and Tomas Uscher (5) who did brilliantly at the back to keep Kola Karim (-1) and his Shoreline at bay for much of the match. It wasn’t until the 3rd of the 4-chukka match that Shoreline found their rhythm with their 7-goal anchor Juan Ambroggio scoring four goals. Tom De Bruin (7) also assisted Tunde Karim (-1) for his solitary goal. The spirited offensive play, though, could not hold RTC who were firing from all positions with Babangida, Diego and Mustapha all scoring to wrap up the match.

The Ham tournament is an extension of Access Bank’s corporate social responsibility partnership with Fifth Chukker to support UNICEF in its anti- HIV/AIDS and anti-poverty campaigns in northern Nigeria. During the lavish lunch that preceded the games, clients of Access bank private banking were introduced to this social commitment as well as other financial products and incentives. At the end of the day’s program, trophies and prizes were presented by Access bank CEO Aigboje Aig-Imoukhuede, Industrialists Molade Okoya Thomas and Tunde Folawiyo, as well as Access bank Deputy Managing Director Herbert Wigwe.
